Instead of doing a final summary of my Web II class in print format, instead I will be doing this digital blog post. Save some trees mang.

Project ONE: What Inspires You?

This web site was designed to showcase a list of my inspirations. The top navigation and cutout aspect was inspired by the website of design company, Erskine Design. The bottom navigation was originally just a simple block of images which linked to their respective pages. After some insight from other designers, a timeline-esque navigation was deemed to be in order. This project could probably have been accomplished much faster if I had mocked it up in photoshop first.

PROJECT TWO: BRAND X

This website was designed for a micro site for “Brand-X”. This microsite is for the fictional GPS company, Hudson, for a fictional series of GPS units. Its use of texture, ruddedness, rollovers and outdoor elements reinforce the outdoor aspect of the GPS. Also developed were an HTML email blast and a mobile site.

PROJECT 3: CLIENT PROJECT

This client based project was a team effort to develop a website for the local non profit organization, OswegoReads. based on a wordpress platform.

NOTES-THUMBNAILS:

A logo and poster were also developed based on input from client meetings.

PROJECT 4: SELF DETERMINED: STEVEN SMITH ART.COM

This project is the redesign of stevensmithart.com, the portfolio of an html impaired illustrator, Steven Smith. The platform is wordpress, and requires little to no HTML experience in order to update it.

Steves old site was not update-able by himself and looked like this:

The new site is more personal, and more professional– including a contact form and resume page.

OK so its finally done! OswegoReads.com is live! This is the website that my teammate ryan and I have been slaving on for the past month. The site is for a community wide “book club” who will sponsor events, theme community gatherings, uh…

I don’t know cmon I just design the website.

It officialy goes public the 18th, after we train the staff on how to update and maintain their new website. It runs on WordPress, and I’d say that its pretty good for my first client website. They seem really excited to get started, lets hope they can learn quick!

Sometimes I feel like blogging.

Sometimes I don’t. This is one of those times when I don’t feel like blogging. I have no REASON to blog, if I had constant cool stuff going on I could take pictures and post them, blog about past and upcomming events, etc. Maybe one day when I’m famous I have an interesting job which takes me places and where I do things, I’ll have something to blog about.

Till then, I am just counting down the days until my server contract expires with godaddy so that I can get a new server with bluehost. Maybe then I’ll host a wordpress, customize the crap out of it, and it will be cool. Until then, stay tuned for the release of the “oswego reads” website, steves new site, and anastasias new site. Oh, I didn’t blog about those? QQ some more, maybe I will.

Project 2, Part 1

Ok, so. I’ve been lacking posts latley since I’ve been chuggin away at the various projects which I have going on. One of those is this website which I’ve cooked up as part of a 3 pronged project. This website is a microsite, meant to provide consumers a quick look at a product before they click to continue to a main company site. Using a microsite lets designers brand a product a certain way, instead of following the set brand of the company’s main site. Agree with them or not, this is my microsite.

The assigned product was “Brand X” of a fictional company. I decided that “X marks the spot” and so I made “Brand X” a brand of GPS. The original tagline got lost along the way, but hey, you always cut out your favorite part.

Content is a little light, but afterall, it isn’t even a real product.

“Inspiration”

So I took 3 minutes and finally visited my google arch nemesis– Pat McNeil (a web designer >_<) and it turns out he actually knows what he’s talking about. He’s written two books, writes columns for web design sites, and runs my new favorite inspiration website, Design Meltdown. I URGE you to check it out. Just for a few seconds, you’ll be hooked!

He’s also written a little bit about “inspiration”. According to him, there are 3 types of people who take inspiration…

“…a person inclined to copy designs, a person inclined to seek as little inspiration as possible from others for fear of copying, or you’re the type that pulls ideas from many sources into a single fresh new design.”

Design Meltdown definitely caters to the third type of person. The site has hundreds and hundreds of web design examples, each categorized with written introductions to the sections. For sure, this should be in EVERYONE’s “inspirations” bookmarks/favorites.

So I’m sitting around the house trying to nail down the things that inspire me. I’ve got a list going, but I’ll hold onto that for now.

What I wanted to share was a site I found a long time ago, and always look to for some inspiration. By that I mean, I look at them as the kind of design firm I want to be a part of some day. Whether I own it or just work for it— whatev.

I watched “Be Kind Rewind” the other day– the previews made it out to be a comedy but it really sort of turns into a sad movie at the end doesn’t it?

I figured, hey, ok, SOMEBODY else must have some sweded films out there, right? Google away! The first site I came to was an article on the sweded flm phenomnon. “Top 10 fan sweded films” More like top 4. Apparently, just as in the movie, copright holders are none too pleased about their own fans creating tributes to their favorite movies. Go figure.

Regardless, I would definitely watch Lord of the Rings in 4 minutes rather than an entire day.

My favorite so far: Terminator 2.
